As humans return to the Moon and prepare for Mars, the space environment itself becomes one of the greatest challenges to mission success.

In this master class, Dan Britt, Pegasus Professor of Astronomy and Planetary Sciences at UCF, will explore how the physical realities of off-Earth environments - especially lunar and Martian regolith - affect spacecraft, habitats, systems, and human activity. From dust toxicity and abrasion to thermal extremes and surface chemistry, he’ll explain why understanding these environments at a detailed, scientific level is essential for designing reliable missions.

This session will show how planetary science directly informs engineering, operations, and risk management - and why mastering the space environment is not just an academic exercise, but a prerequisite for building a sustainable human presence beyond Earth.
